How to Replace Your License

The first step to acquiring a Montana driver’s license is to visit your local driver exam station or MVD Express. Unfortunately, replacing your driver’s license cannot be done over the phone or online, unlike license renewals. That being said, if you are a resident of the state of Montana, but you are temporarily living out of state, you do have the option of replacing your license by mail. Luckily, at MVD Express, we give in-state residents the option of scheduling your appointment in advance, and we even offer same-day appointments, allowing you to replace your license in no time!

When you arrive at the MVD, you will need to provide the necessary documents in order to begin the replacement process. This process is very similar to the process of obtaining your driver’s license. The documents you will need to provide include:

  • Two documents from the list of primary documents to prove your identity – these documents will need to show your legal name and your age. These documents can be your U.S. or Canadian birth certificate, a valid, unexpired U.S. passport, and a driver’s license with a color photo that has been expired less than five years.

  • OR one document from the primary list and one document from the secondary list of documents, which include a U.S. Social Security card or a Canadian Social Insurance card, a certified marriage certificate, or a Medicare, Medicaid, or health insurance card that includes your name and insurance ID number.

Once you supply the necessary documents, you will be required to pay a fee of $10.30, as well as the applicable MVD Express fees.
