The Challenges of Canadian Titles: Part Two

With Montana and Canada being so close in proximity, car dealerships will often import Canadian vehicles to sell in the United States. However, importing these vehicles is not an easy task, and many people frequently run into problems. In part one of this multi-part series, we discussed the first few steps you need to take in order to successfully import a Canadian vehicle into the United States. In part two of this series, we will continue to talk about the process and steps you need to take to import a Canadian Vehicle.

Crossing the Border
In our previous blog, we discussed the safety measurements and forms that you will need in order to import your Canadian vehicle into the United States. You can transport your vehicle across the border of Canada only when you have ensured that you have all the necessary documentation and inspections.
At the border, you will be asked to go into the customs building to fill out the necessary paperwork. The forms you will need can be found online, however, you may be asked to fill out additional forms. Once the forms are filled out, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) will inspect the vehicle to make sure that it matches the information you provided in the forms. Typically, this process will take a half an hour or more depending on if there are any problems with the paperwork.
Cleaning the Undercarriage
If you are having your vehicle shipped, it’s important that you have the undercarriage steam-sprayed or cleaned thoroughly before it is shipped. The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to avoid any dangerous pests being transported across the border, which is why they require that the undercarriage of all vehicles needs to be free of any foreign soil.
What to do Once You Are Back in the U.S.
Once you have completed the paperwork and successfully imported your Canadian vehicle into the United States, there are still a few necessary steps that you will need to take. Luckily, you do not have to worry about insuring or registering the vehicle. Your business will cover the insurance, making the process easier once you have imported the vehicle into Montana.
