Transferring Your License to Montana
New residents of Montana have 60 days to transfer their out-of-state licenses, including motorcycle licenses or endorsements. To complete this process, visit your local Montana MVD office and provide proof of identity, Montana residency, and legal presence in the United States.
A vision test may be required, and additional fees may apply. While retaking written or behind-the-wheel tests is not always mandatory, it's advisable to be prepared. Once the requirements are fulfilled, you will be issued your new Montana license and motorcycle endorsement.
How to Get a Montana Motorcycle License
To obtain a Montana motorcycle endorsement, follow these steps:
- Meet the age requirements
- Possess a valid Montana driver's license
- Complete the on-road motorcycle test (MVD Express does not perform on-road motorcycle testing)
- Pay the motorcycle licensing fees

Motorcycle Permits in Montana
Before obtaining your full motorcycle license, you can apply for a motorcycle permit. To acquire the permit, visit your local Montana MVD office and bring your Montana driver's license. The process includes passing a vision test and the mandatory written knowledge exam.
Keep in mind that motorcycle permits have limitations, such as practicing with a licensed driver who holds a motorcycle endorsement and immediate supervision during practice sessions. Permits are valid for one year, and if it expires before taking the road test, additional fees and written testing may be required.

MT Motorcycle Education Courses
If you prefer to skip the road test, the Montana MVD allows you to waive it by completing an approved motorcycle education course offered by Montana Motorcycle Riders Safety (MSF).
Visit the MSF website to find specific course information. After successfully passing the course, you will receive a certificate of completion, which you can present at the MVD office to obtain your motorcycle endorsement.
Motorcycle License Fees in Montana
The Montana MVD determines license fees based on age and the number of years the license is valid. An additional $0.52 per year is added for a motorcycle endorsement. For detailed fee information, consult the Montana Motor Vehicle Division fee chart.
