Requirements for a First-Year Restricted License

  • Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program: If you are under the age of 18, Montana follows a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. This program involves three stages: learner's permit, intermediate license, and full driver's license. Each stage has specific requirements and restrictions, such as supervised driving hours, nighttime driving restrictions, and minimum age requirements.
  • Road Skills Test: Once you have met the requirements of the GDL program and gained sufficient driving experience, you will be ready to take the road skills test. This test assesses your ability to safely operate a vehicle, follow traffic rules, and execute essential driving maneuvers. Our team provides guidance and support to help you prepare for this important exam.
  • Additional Documentation: Depending on your individual circumstances, some additional documents may be required during the license application process. Our team is well-versed in the specific requirements and can provide you with personalized assistance to ensure you have everything you need.

Tips to Prepare for Your Montana Driving Test

When preparing for your driving test as a driver's permit holder in Montana, there are a few important things to keep in mind. Always arrive at your designated testing location on time and with all the required documentation. Be sure to bring your Learner License/permit, identification documents (such as a birth certificate or passport), proof of residency, and any additional documents specified by the Montana Motor Vehicle Division.

What to Expect During a Driving Test

When going into your MVD Express Montana driving test, it is essential to be prepared and aware of what to expect. The driving test is designed to assess your ability to safely operate a vehicle and follow traffic laws. During the test, you can anticipate demonstrating various skills, including lane changes, turning, parking, observing traffic signs, and more.

What Happens After Your Driving Test

After completing the driving test and obtaining a driver's permit, the next step is to apply for a First-Year Restricted License. Upon receiving the license, it will initially display a restriction code on the front and back, which remains in effect for one year. During this period, specific restrictions apply to ensure the safety of yourself as a new driver and others around you, including:

  • All occupants must wear a seatbelt
  • Drivers under 18 cannot drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m

These restrictions automatically end on the indicated date on the license or when the individual turns 18, transitioning them to a Full Privilege Driver License, which grants full driving privileges.
