Why REAL ID Matters
The REAL ID Act was passed following the events of 9/11 to improve the reliability and security of state-issued IDs. It helps prevent identity fraud and creates a consistent national standard for identification.
A REAL ID looks much like a standard license but includes a gold star in the upper right corner to indicate compliance. Without it, you won’t be able to:
- Fly within the U.S.
- Enter military bases or federal courthouses
- Access secure federal facilities

Do I Have to Get a REAL ID?
Not necessarily — but if you plan to fly domestically or enter federal buildings after May 7, 2025, it’s a must. You can still use a valid passport as an alternative, but for most people, upgrading to a REAL ID is the easiest option.
