How Soon Do You Need to Update Your License?
  • Non-commercial drivers to transfer their license within 60 days of moving
  • Commercial drivers to apply within 30 days

What You'll Need:

Proof of Identity

You’ll need two documents — either:

  • Two primary documents, or
  • One primary and one secondary

Primary Examples:

  • Current, valid out-of-state driver’s license
  • Certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport

Secondary Examples:

  • Original U.S. Social Security card
  • Certified marriage certificate
Proof of Montana Residency

All documents must include your name and physical Montana address (not a PO box). Examples include:

  • Rental agreement signed by your landlord
  • Current vehicle or life insurance policy
  • Certified school records from the past 4 months

Proof of Authorized Presence

Bring one of the following:

  • Certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card

Special Notes for Military Personnel and Spouses

Montana has a few exceptions for active-duty service members and their families:

  • Active-duty military with a valid license from another state do not need to obtain a Montana license unless employed in the state (excluding service roles).
  • Montana-licensed military personnel may continue using their Montana license until 30 days after an honorable discharge.

Spouses of military members must obtain a Montana license within 90 days of becoming employed in the state.
