If you’re like many Americans, you’ve probably heard about the new REAL ID cards that states are now issuing as an alternative to the standard driver’s license. Confused about the difference between a REAL ID and a standard driver’s license? You’re not alone. The two documents may look similar, but they have very different functions. MVD Express Montana hopes to clear up some of that confusion in this blog.

Standard Driver’s License

A standard driver’s license is a state-issued photo identification card that allows you to drive legally. It proves that you are who you say you are and that you are legally allowed to drive a car. In many states, it also serves as proof of age, making it a valid form of identification when buying alcohol or tobacco products.

REAL ID

A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state ID card that is compliant with the federal REAL ID Act. It is issued by a state motor vehicle agency and contains a number of security features, such as a barcode and a gold star on the card, that make it more difficult to counterfeit. A REAL ID also requires additional proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport, when applying.

What’s the Difference?

The main difference between a REAL ID and a standard driver’s license is that a REAL ID is a more secure form of identification. This form of identification is accepted at airports, allowing you to board domestic flights in the U.S., enter federal buildings, and access certain military bases. A standard driver’s license does not.

So if you plan on flying domestically or accessing certain government facilities, you will need a REAL ID. But if you just need a state-issued photo ID to drive, you can get a standard driver’s license. Depending on the state you live in, you may also be able to use a standard driver’s license as a valid form of identification for certain activities.

Do I Need A REAL ID?

The REAL ID is a new form of identification that will soon be required to fly domestically or access federal facilities. In order to acquire a REAL ID, you will need to provide proof of your full legal name, date of birth, and authorized presence; your social security number; and Montana residency. You will also need to provide documentation of all name changes. This new card will replace your Montana license and will be required by May 2023, so be sure to start the application process now.

All in all, a REAL ID is a more secure driver’s license or state ID card that allows for access to certain facilities and activities that are not available to those with a standard driver’s license. Be sure to check your state’s motor vehicle agency website for more information on what documents you need to apply for a REAL ID.
